Use the contributing roof area
A barrel beneath one downspout usually receives water from only part of the roof. Use a roof plan or measure the horizontal footprint that drains to that downspout. Roof pitch does not increase the rainfall falling on the building’s footprint.
In U.S. units, one inch of rain on one square foot is about 0.623 gallons. In metric, one millimeter on one square meter is one liter. Multiply by an efficiency factor to account for splash, first flush, gutter loss, and imperfect capture.
Storage is only half the system
A 55-gallon barrel fills from roughly 88 square feet of roof in a one-inch storm before losses. Most roofs contribute far more, so overflow is normal rather than exceptional. Route it away from foundations and toward a place that can accept the flow without erosion or nuisance.
- Use a stable, level base designed for the full water weight.
- Screen openings and follow local mosquito-control guidance.
- Check local rules and roofing-material limitations before use on edible crops.
- Never connect a rain system to household drinking-water plumbing.
Model a design storm and an ordinary week
A large storm tests overflow; a typical dry interval tests whether storage meaningfully serves the garden. Run both scenarios. Bigger storage is useful only when you have the space, stable base, safe overflow, and enough irrigation demand to empty it between storms.
