Spacing can describe different things
Seed packets may give seed spacing, thinning distance, plant spacing, and row spacing. Those numbers are not interchangeable. The final plant spacing is the useful input for a visual bed layout; seed spacing only describes how densely to sow before thinning.
Traditional rows leave walking and working space between lines. Intensive beds can use a grid or offset pattern because the gardener reaches from paths outside the bed. The same crop may therefore carry more than one defensible spacing recommendation.
Offset rows change geometry, not biology
A triangular or offset layout uses space efficiently because the second row sits in the gaps of the first. It may fit more planting points than a square grid, but it does not make crowding consequences disappear. Leaf canopy, root competition, disease pressure, and harvest access still set limits.
Adjust the sketch before the garden
Place tall trellised crops where they will not shade shorter plants unexpectedly. Reserve edges for crops that spill, and keep frequently harvested crops within easy reach. If a plan requires stepping into the bed, the layout is too dense or the bed is too wide for its access pattern.
- Use the exact variety’s packet as the first reference.
- Increase room in humid conditions when airflow is a recurring problem.
- Distinguish baby-leaf harvest spacing from full-size plant spacing.
- Save the actual layout and record what you would change next season.
